Press Release April 2008
On or around the 17th of April a press release was put out by the Act Now partnership.  Act Now is the organisation responsible for making sure that everyone in Cornwall has access to broadband.  They were particularly active on our part as our local exchange was the last one in Cornwall to be upgraded.  Which had been a source of some embarrassment to us as we had been early adopters of email and generally communicating with our clients via the internet.  Unfortunately having relocated to an area where only dial-up was available we had to resort to sending out large files on CD Rom via surface mail.

Thanks to Act Now we got broadband access early in '06.  During a meeting with Clare Morgan, the Media Relations Officer of Act Now, one of us used the phrase "expand inwards to Cornwall".  She was quite taken with it and, discovering a little bit more about Inner Business she asked if she could put together a press release about us.

On one form or another this is what appeared in a number of newspapers, This version come from the Cornish & Devon Post of 24 April.

Just in case it's not very clear in your browser a text version of the original release follows :

Globally successful business expanding

A successful South West business with a list of top international clients is now looking to expand inwards - to Cornwall.

Dave Smith and Marian Moriarty relocated their company Inner Business from Oxford to North Tamerton in 1999. In 2006 they received support from actnow – the Objective One project that rolled out high speed broadband across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. Their nearby exchange was one of the last in the region to be upgraded to broadband but has resulted in huge benefits for their business.  They can now interact with their clients in a full 21st century mode, “… before that we had to send out large files on CD via surface mail.  Very embarrassing.”

Inner Business is a company devoted to helping their clients to grow, develop and become more profitable by harnessing the power of the creative potential of their people, brands, products and services. The pair have clients across the world including several in the USA and helped with the early development of the design brief for Heathrow’s brand new Terminal Five. Other clients have included airlines, unions, pharmaceutical companies and major supermarket chains.

Dave, whose background is in biology and previously worked in research and development at Unilever for 15 years, described what Inner Business specialises in – facilitation. He said: “We work with individuals, teams and organisations to help them achieve goals. A lot of that work involves taking people out of their comfort zones while at the same time making them feel safe.

“We use tools and techniques to allow people to be creative, to problem solve and to make changes. We can bring a new culture into a company leading to invention of new products and services and new strategies. So our expertise is in how people think and interact.”

Dave and Marian now want to expand their business to more Cornwall based clients. He said: “Marian realised that we have worked with more American companies in America than we have south of Bristol.  We want to work more with local companies as Cornwall’s economy is on the up.”

Marian, who has been a teacher and is also qualified as marketer, eventually spending seven years working in that role for 3M, added: “We also want to help the companies here, perhaps arranging for them to come together so that we can pass on skills that smaller businesses need.”

To this end Inner Business is now a member of the Business League and is relying, as always, on word of mouth recommendations for their client base to grow.  They also recently gave an interactive seminar on “Thinking for Creativity, Innovation & Change” for the Innovators Forum at the Combined Universities in Cornwall Tremough campus in Penryn.
